Gary A. Vollrath, 70, of Jamestown, ND passed away Sunday, June 13, 2021 at his happy place, his shop at home.
Gary Albert Vollrath was born to Albert and Ann (Neiman) Vollrath in Altona, Manitoba, Canada. He grew up in Neche, ND. “EEK” went to college at NDSCS in Wahpeton where he studied diesel mechanics, football, track, and golden gloves boxing. On January 31st 1969, Gary met the love of his life, and bride for 51 years, JoAnn, on her birthday. Gary won the Tough Man Contest of North Dakota in 1981 and used his winnings to take his family to Disneyland. Gary served his country for 34 years in the National Guard, ascending to the rank of Master Sargent. He also protected his community for 38 years while serving as a volunteer firefighter. Gary spent his retirement traveling to visit his children and vacationing with his family. Many days where spent in his shop and giving rides in his side by side.
Gary had many hobbies, including taking his boys fishing and hunting. His garden was always kept and grew lots of potatoes, and the lawn was never out of order. Later, he bought a military Jeep and drove it all around town and in parades. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree and Honor Guard and actively participated in their duties. Gary also volunteered at a nursing home comforting residents and worked as a grounds keeper at the cemetery where he will be laid to rest.
Gary is survived by his wife, JoAnn Vollrath; sons, Jim Vollrath, Tige Vollrath, and Scott Vollrath. Gary’s pride and joy are his 4 granddaughters, Meggy, Klaire, Miesha, and Brielle. He is also survived by a sister, Janis Denault.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, June Hurtt.
Mass of Christian Burial - 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 18, 2021 at St. James Basilica, Jamestown, with Father Bernard Pfau officiating.
Prayer Service - 7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 17, 2021 at St. James Basilica, Jamestown, with a Rosary beginning at 6:45pm.
Burial – Calvary Cemetery, Jamestown.
